Who is the Holy Spirit really?

by | Oct 12, 2021 | Blog, Fresh Bread Devotionals, Holy Spirit

I’m always shocked by the number of people who truly don’t understand the Holy Spirit.  Now I’m not saying I know all there is to know, but I hope as we go through this post you’ll see why you need Him in your life.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth (the Bible).  He is the POWER that comes with our Christian life.

This post is merely an introduction to who the Holy Spirit is and who He can be in my life (and your life if you’ll let Him).

But before we get started on who He is, I want to answer once and for all this question Is the Holy Spirit REALLY for Today?

The Holy Spirit of Power at Creation

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Genesis 1:2 KJV

God spoke and the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) went to work.  He built everything that you see around you when God spoke.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Romans 8:11 KJV

The same power that rose Jesus from the grave lives inside of us.  We have access to that power every single day.

Why is He here?

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

John 16:7 KJV

Jesus sent Him.  It baffles me sometimes when I see people scared of the Holy Spirit.  Doesn’t the Bible tell us that every good and perfect gift comes from above?  Well Jesus just told us that He sent the Holy Spirit from above…so He’s GOOD.

Why do I need the Holy Spirit?

People will say, “Well why do I really need the Holy Spirit?”  The simple answer is because He’s God!  Don’t you want all that God has to offer?

He’s the Power

Well why do you need a power outlet?

The Holy Spirit is the POWER SOURCE of your salvation.  He gives you the ability to DO something with your salvation.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Luke 3:21-22 KJV

I was baptized in the Holy Spirit long before I realized the significance of this verse.  The point isn’t that Jesus was baptized, but what happened before and after He was baptized. All His miracles were performed after being baptized with the Holy Spirit.

He’s the Helper

Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to help us in this life.  He is our Comforter, Guide, Advocate and more.  He was sent to us to help us accomplish the tasks that God set for us to do.  For more information on how He is our helper check out this post.

How to Receive the Holy Spirit

I want to give you a few very easy steps that will help you when receiving the Holy Spirit.

  1. God has already given the Holy Spirit. It’s up to you to receive the Holy Spirit now!
  2. Once you are saved you are a candidate to receive the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:9-13; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
  3. Simply ask the Holy Spirit to fill your heart and receive the evidence of speaking in tongues.
    1. Here’s a prayer that you can pray.
    2. Prayer for the Holy Spirit
  4. You will then have to move your vocal cords.  The Holy Spirit won’t move your tongue for you.
  5. Open your mouth and every time you go to speak think I am receiving the Holy Spirit now by faith then start moving your tongue.

You know that everything we receive is by faith.  The Holy Spirit isn’t any different.  It takes faith to believe in your heart that the Holy Spirit will enter into you when you confess it, but no more faith than it took to receive Jesus!

Receiving the Holy Spirit is the single most important thing that a Christian can do past accepting the free gift of salvation.  Many Christians skirt around this topic because it makes people uncomfortable, but I promise you there are more benefits to receiving the Holy Spirit than even the very little that we have discussed here today.
