What is the “Wellspring of Life”?

A few months ago the Lord spoke to me in my personal time and impressed upon me to study wells.  At first glance, I thought “What in the world do wells have to do with anything?” but pretty soon I came to realize that wells are one of the most important illustrations to understanding our daily walk with the Lord.

It’s my prayer that as you read this post today the Holy Spirit will begin to speak through me to you revealing Jesus to you in a greater way.

Our Text

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 4:14 KJV

What Do Wells Represent in the Old Testament

There are three powerful and simple things to understand about the wells people dug in Bible times.

#1 Wells were a Source of Life.

Remember throughout the Bible most of the terrain with which people were traveling was nothing but desert.  Therefore, something like a well was the lifeblood of that area of land.

Cattle, people and crops all relied on wells to give them life.  Without the well, animals wouldn’t get water, people would dehydrate, and farm land wouldn’t bring in crops.

It’s easy to understand then why so many people in that culture put such an emphasis on wells.

#2 Wells Were a Way to Claim Land

To own the well was to own that section of land. You were the one with rightful claim to the land if you were the one who dug the well on the property.

People would then fight over the well in a region because it was the point of ownership for the land.

#3 Wells were a Landmark for Future Generations.

Men such as Abraham and Isaac had moments surrounding wells marking occasions and leaving a landmark as a memorial to that event for future generations.

21 Then his servants dug another well, and they quarreled over that also, so Isaac named it Sitnah (enmity).

22 He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over that one; so he named it Rehoboth (broad places), saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be prosperous in the land.”

Genesis 26:21-22 AMP

The people in those days would use wells as traveling points and landmarks between regions coming back to them time and time again while simultaneously remembering the reason it was there in the first place.

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

John 4:12 KJV

Jesus’ Call Today

Jesus today wants to plant a wellspring of life inside your heart to …

  1. Give Life to those around you
  2. Claim you as His own
  3. Create a landmark moment in your life leaving you forever changed

Jesus at the Well

In John 4, we see a very interesting interaction with Jesus and a woman from Samaria.  Jesus came to a well dug by Jacob and asked for a drink.  He and the woman had a conversation, but it was never really about Jesus being thirsty.

Jesus used the illustration of the well to describe what he wanted life to look like for all people.

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew [about] God’s gift [of eternal life], and who it is who says, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him [instead], and He would have given you living water (eternal life).”

John 4:10 AMP

Jesus claims you as His

Just like a well Jesus desires to plant a wellspring of life into your heart to claim you for Himself.  Jesus longs for a relationship with you. That relationship includes peace and joy inside your heart filling the empty places with life.

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

1 Peter 2:9 NKJV

Whether you realize it or not Christ actually died for you to purchase you back from the hand of sin and sickness.

8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 NIV

We are all currently and actively headed to hell because of something Adam did thousands of years ago. If left to our own devices we will all end up there not because God wants us to be, but because we are born into a separated state from Him.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:18 KJV

That’s the state the Lord Jesus found us in when He said…

17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My [own] life so that I may take it back. 18 No one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down voluntarily. I am authorized and have power to lay it down and to give it up, and I am authorized and have power to take it back. This command I have received from My Father.”

John 10:17-18 AMP

Jesus voluntarily took our place in punishment for sin so that all barriers to relationship could be removed. The only thing left for us to do now is simply ask of Him for the eternal life He purchased!

That’s the water that Jesus spoke of in John 4.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

John 4:10 KJV

When we ask for this eternal life from Him, He comes into our life and springs up eternal life and salvation from sin.  We are then claimed by Him as his very own special people. We become part of the family!

That’s good news because it means that Jesus watches over us and keeps us safe.

Jesus gives us life for those around you

Everywhere a Christian goes with this wellspring of life becomes and area where others can prosper. Just as a well brings life to the desert places, cattle and people living there, so too we are supposed to be life in every situation we enter!

As born again wellspring holding people of God, we are supposed to be the sweet fragrance of Jesus’ presence in every place we attend.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us spreads and makes evident everywhere the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of Him.

15 For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which ascends] to God, [discernible both] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;

16 to the latter one an aroma from death to death [a fatal, offensive odor], but to the other an aroma from life to life [a vital fragrance, living and fresh]. And who is adequate and sufficiently qualified for these things?

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 AMP

The Christian who is full of God’s life and power should be a witness of Christ in every area of life.

8 But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.

Acts 1:8 AMP

This change should include character development and love walk until everyone can clearly see Jesus in and through the new wellspring holding believer.

4 In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men.

John 1:4 AMP

Everywhere a Christian goes he takes this same power and life to affect others with the life of God (the wellspring he himself holds).

Jesus plants a landmark to others.

If you are not a born again believer and haven’t experienced this life I am talking about, then Jesus wants to create a land mark moment in you today!

Just as a well was often named and used as the landmark for travel in the areas of desert.  It was the place that travelers when weary could come back to.

So too Jesus when you receive the wellspring of life from salvation, will cause this moment to be a landmark moment in your life.

To receive everlasting life is the single most important moment ever to be made in your life.

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone [really] loves Me, he will keep My word (teaching); and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him.

John 14:23 AMP

Jesus is here to do the same thing he offered the samaritan woman.  He will bring you life and come to make his dwelling palace with you.

The Cry of Jesus Today

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation].

29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls.

30 For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 AMP

Maybe you have “tried religion”.  That’s not what I’m suggesting.

Jesus wants a true and perfect relationship with you that isn’t a list of dos and don’ts.

He wants to lighten your burdens and give you life that passes all understanding, and the good news is that He paid the price for you so that He can offer it free of charge!

Receive Eternal Life Today

Jesus is alive today.

The requirement is that you simply acknowledge that you cannot do it on your own, humble yourself, and pray to God asking Him for forgiveness and salvation.

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 KJV

Start your new life today by believing this confession and saying it after me.
