To walk as gods on this earth: Jesus the Last Adam

by | Sep 8, 2020 | Blog, Fresh Bread Devotionals, Overcoming, Righteousness

Jesus is referred to as the “Last Adam”. Last week we looked at the First Adam when we started this series on “To Walk as gods on this Earth” talking about the Fall.  God gave Adam all authority here on this earth, but Adam gave it to the Devil when he disobeyed God.

This whole month we are talking on our authority because of Christ.  (Some call this the “in Him” realities.)

This is HUGE.  Without a firm understanding of who we are in Christ, we cannot accomplish what God has placed us on this earth to do.

If you haven’t yet, check out last week’s post before reading this post.  You need a firm foundation on the fall before we can understand what Paul means when he says Jesus is the Last Adam.

Our Text

5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.

6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Psalm 82:5-6 KJV

Jesus The Last Adam – Foretold

If you grew up in Christian circles you might have heard the statement,

“It must be prophesied before it can be actualized.”

Beginning in Genesis 1 God speaks and the physical world obeys.  The Bible teaches us that our words have power.

23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Mark 11:23-24 KJV

The whole of heaven and earth was created by the words coming from God’s mouth.  Nothing ever created occurs without it first being prophesied.  That is why there are hundreds of Old Testament prophecies about Jesus.

Jesus Prophesied

The Last Adam – Jesus – was talked about even as early as Genesis 3:15. God was moving to bring Jesus into the world.

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Genesis 3:15 KJV

This is right after Adam sinned.  God spoke of the women’s seed.  But wait – a woman doesn’t have seed.

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Matthew 1:23 KJV

God was talking about the virgin birth. This was prophesied 4000 years before Jesus was ever born, but as far as God was concerned, He took the first steps there in the garden to restore us back to relationship with Him.

Jesus the Last Adam – Our Sin

Why did Jesus have to come?

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 5:12 KJV

Our sin – brought on by Adam – had to be paid for.  We were slaves to sin.  So much so that even if we wanted to be free from doing the wrong things we couldn’t be.

This sin is what separates us from God.

Sin is actively choosing to not do things God’s way.

Sin comes with a price though.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23 KJV

This is why Jesus had to die.  The price for sin is death and Jesus paid it for you and I.

Jesus the Last Adam – the Sacrifice

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Romans 5:18 KJV

Salvation is a free gift.  It is not something that we can earn.

Jesus

  • Came to earth (Matthew 1:23-25)
  • Fulfilled the hundreds of prophecies about Himself ()
  • Willingly Died (Matthew 27:32-56)
  • Rose Again (Mark 16:5-7)
  • Is Seated at the right hand of God (Romans 8:34)

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Romans 8:32-35 KJV

Because of what Christ did, there is no condemnation or separation from the love of God.  Nothing we do or say can separate us from God after we confess Him as our Lord and savior Savior.

Jesus the Last Adam – Our Salvation

This is the free gift that came upon all men.  That if we would believe in our hearts that Jesus did all these things and would confess Him as our Lord.  We will be saved. (Romans 10:9-10)

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 KJV

Jesus is our Authority

So then how can we walk as gods on this earth?  It is through the power of Jesus’ name.

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Colossians 2:15 KJV

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Philippians 2:9-10 KJV

Jesus has the name that is above everything.  That same name has He given to us.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Mark 16:17 KJV

This is the authority that we have because of Christ.

5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.

6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Psalm 82:5-6 KJV

Because of Jesus we have the authority of God here on this earth.  When people say, “How could God allow that tornado or that hurricane to kill those people?”

Just as Adam was given dominion over the whole earth. Now we have been given the same thing.

God has given us the power to command the wind and waves to cease.  Remember when the waves threatened to kill Jesus in the boat, but He wasn’t afraid because He knew His authority.

That is the same way we should be in our lives.  Know the authority you have in the name of Jesus.  It is the name that every demon, storm, financial problem, sickness or anything else has to bow to.

Why the Last Adam?

Why is Jesus called the Last Adam? Jesus was born of God. Just as Adam was. He was born in the likeness of man also. Just like Adam.

Jesus had the authority of heaven on the earth, and because he spoiled principalities and powers, He won the keys of death and hell. Jesus has the authority over heaven and earth now.

This is why Jesus is called the last Adam. God has completed the work. Now He is simply waiting on you and I to recognize the authority that we have in this earth and use it for Him.
