Adam’s Fall brought sin into this world. We call it Adam’s Fall because of how he gave up his authority on this earth. Today my goal is to stretch your thinking. The title of this post, “To walk as gods on this earth” is a bold title – I realize. Throughout this month we will look at the authority we as Christians have on this earth.
And hopefully as we go through this study, you will see how we as christians can make such a bold statement in Christ.
All last month we spoke on the POWER of God – the Holy Spirit.
- The Holy Spirit: How He provides us with Daily Guidance
- The Holy Spirit: The Strength to Witness
- Is the Holy Spirit REALLY for Today?
- Praying in Tongues – Why should we?
This month is all about the AUTHORITY of God. The reason we have the ability to use the power of God. In other words we are talking about Jesus.
Our Text
1 God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
Psalm 82 KJV
Adam was the god of this earth
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:26-28 KJV
Many of us even if we didn’t grow up in church know the story of creation in the Bible. When God created Adam, He created Adam in His likeness. That means God created Adam in the likeness of God himself.
Adam had a spirit
When Adam breathed his first breath, he was given the “breath of life” (a spirit) just as God is a spirit (Genesis 2:7). This is what sets man apart from the rest of creation.
Unlike animals which have bodies and souls (minds, wills, and emotions), human beings also have a spirit.
Adam had authority / dominion over the entire earth
God specifically says in verse 1:26 of Genesis that man will have dominion over “all the earth”. That means every animal, every storm or natural disaster and every plant or crop on this earth was under the authority of Adam after creation.
Everything after its kind means you and me too
This promise and authority was not simply given to Adam alone. If we remember Genesis 1:26, it says “man” not “a man”. This authority wasn’t just intended for Adam but for every man and woman that came after Adam – that’s you and me!
The Law of Everything After its Kind
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
Genesis 1:24 KJV
Throughout the creation process the living creatures created were always specified as “after his kind”. You don’t plant apple seeds and get an orange tree.
God intended for every man and women to be just like Adam and Eve – pure, spotless, and to have dominion over this earth.
Adam committed high treason
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Genesis 3:6 KJV
Even after God told Adam and Eve not to eat of the fruit, they did. This is the moment that Adam gave up his authority on the earth. He fell from power and authority and allowed Satan to steal this birthright.
5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
Psalm 82:5 KJV
Now we can understand what the Psalmist wrote when He said that all the foundations of the earth are out of course. Sin corrupted perfect creation.
James 1:17 says that every good and perfect gift is from above. God created a perfect creation, but because Adam was the authority in the earth and he committed sin, all the earth is out of course. It is now corrupt.
Paul puts it this way in Romans he says,
19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Romans 8:19-22 KJV
Jesus came to restore our authority after Adam’s Fall
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Romans 5:18-19 KJV
Now though Adam’s Fall let sin into this world, we are made righteous and justified by faith in Jesus Christ. We have been given the name of Jesus to use. It is our authority. God has restored us back better than before.
Next time we will look more in depth into this restoration by looking at what happened after Adam’s Fall. What did God have to do with Jesus to restore us back? And what authority do we have today to walk as gods on this earth?
Think about verse 6 of Psalms 82
“I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.”
