Today, we are continuing our discussion on “Entering the Promise Land” by looking at “Adam’s Fall” or sometimes called “The Fall”. In our first post of this series we talked about what “types and shadows” are. I said that they would be important for this whole series, and this is why.

In this post we look at Egypt and how it represents bondage to sin.

If you missed the post on types and shadows, you can check it out here, or In case you just want a simple recap,

A Type is a person, place or event in nature or history that represents a spiritual person, place or event. Shadowsforshadow” future events.

Understanding Types and Shadows

In this post we see the comparison between EGYPT and our SIN NATURE because of Adam’s Fall.

As a bonus we answer the question “why do bad things happen to good people?”

8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

Genesis 1:8 KJV
  1. Adam was the god (ruler) of this earth.
    1. Genesis 1:26 – “let them have dominion”
      1. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
  2. Satan was jealous of Adam’s authority.  He desired to rule the earth.
    1. Isaiah 14:12-14 KJV
      1. 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
  3. Satan stole Adam’s authority in the earth and became its ruler after Adam’s fall.
    1. Genesis 3:5 – “ye shall be as gods”
      1. Lifted up in the same spirit of pride.
    2. 1 Timothy 2:14 – “And Adam was not deceived”
      1. Adam ate the apple with the motivation of pride and rebellion (same as the devil).
      2. He committed high treason against God by choosing to follow the devil.
  4. Thus the whole earth fell into bondage from sin (aka Egypt).

Adam was the god (ruler) of this earth.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:26 KJV

Adam was the god of this earth.  Adam was made in God’s image and His likeness to rule and reign over the earth.  He was made to have authority and stewardship over everything in the earth.

He was the ruler who was supposed to protect his home (the earth) from thieves and robbers.

A thief or robber is anyone or anything that comes into this earth any other way other than through the doorway – a woman.  That means that Satan and all his fallen angels are thieves and robbers on this earth. (John 10:1 KJV)

Nugget of Truth

It was Adam’s responsibility to stand up for his home and protect it against attacks, but as we will see Adam didn’t do this…

Satan was jealous of Adam’s authority.  He desired to rule the earth.

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Isaiah 14:12-14 KJV

Lucifer wanted to rule the earth.  He wanted to be like God. His pride lifted him up and got him ready for a fall.  Jesus in Luke 10:18 tells us that He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

Notice the number of “I will”’s in these verses.  Satan wanted to exalt himself above all others.  He put his will before God’s will and it led to a fall from heaven.

Satan stole Adam’s authority in the earth and became its ruler.

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:5 KJV

When I originally came across this topic, I started to understand the answer to very common questions that Christians have:

  • Why do bad things happen to good people?
  • Why does God allow tornadoes and hurricanes to kill people if He’s a loving God?

You might ask how in the world does this scripture relate to why bad things happen to good people?  Well I’m glad you asked!

The answer is that Adam gave the authority God gave him to the devil.  That means the devil had authority in the earth until Jesus took it back.

The serpent (the devil) took the time to stroke Adam’s pride.  He led them down the same path that he himself went down.  The danger is that pride comes before a fall.

18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:18 KJV

How did Adam’s Fall Happened?

This is how Adam’s fall happened.  It wasn’t so much about eating the fruit.  It is the fact that Adam sinned and willingly and knowingly went against what God wanted.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

1 Timothy 2:14 KJV

His motivation was the same as Satan’s – Adam committed high treason.  Now the double kick in the pants to the devil is that God turned around and prophesied to make a way for mankind to come back.

Satan was kicked out of heaven, but God started in that moment to make a way back for us.

15 And I will put enmity between thee [the devil] and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Genesis 3:15 KJV

Notice that God said “her seed” – singular.  Women don’t have seeds. Right?  No this is prophesying the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.  Even back in Genesis – immediately after Adam sinned and committed high treason against God – God was already ready to make a way back for Adam and all his descendants.

Thus the whole earth fell into bondage to sin … Egypt or “The Fall”.

This is where we leave off for today. The whole world is in bondage to sin and slaves to it. And now we can fully understand the parallel between Adam’s fall and the death of Joseph in Egypt.

  1. Adam died a spiritual death when he ate of the fruit. Joseph physically died in the land that the Lord brought him into.
  2. Adam let a new ruler into his kingdom when he died spiritually the devil took over.  After Joseph’s death, the kingdom was turned over to a new Pharaoh who didn’t follow the same rules as Joseph (see Exodus 1:8 our verse for today).
    1. Note: This is exactly why bad things happen to good people.  God limited Himself in this earth when He created Adam with authority in the earth.  When Adam handed that authority over to the devil, God could only then intervene in the earth when people would follow the Law – God’s inroad into being able to bless people on the earth.

Egypt represents bondage to sin, but the truth is that because of Jesus Satan is defeated!  He walks about AS a roaring lion seeking whom he MAY devour.  Now when you choose to talk and act like the devil – he has an inroad into your life.  OTHERWISE, you are free to live under God’s provisions when you do things God’s way.
