Today I want to outline some steps to turn the Word of God into the anointing of God in your life. The truth is that I cannot do this apart from the Holy Spirit. If I try to MAKE this happen, it won’t end up anywhere profitable.
If you missed my last post talking about the things you should include in your morning prayer routine, you can check it out here: 4 Points to an Effective Morning Prayer Routine.
This sermon has been stirring inside me for a while now. Jesus is the giver of “new wine” (anointing). When you hear the Bible talk of wine, it’s talking about the anointing of Jesus flowing out of you to reach the needs of other people. The Holy Spirit comes upon you to meet the needs of another person spirit, soul or body. This is what my pastor would call true prosperity.
In the water into wine story that we see as Jesus’ first miracle in John 2:1-11, we see a physical representation of a spiritual truth that we need to latch onto today.
We as believers are required to convert water into wine in our own lives.
One night as I was studying the Bible, God started talking to me about this story and this blog post is the result of that conversation with Jesus.
Water and Wine Symbolism
Water represents the Word / Spirit of God in your heart. You are filled with a measure of water in your heart when you are born again, and continue to fill yourself with water when you put the truth of God’s Word into your heart. The Bible calls your heart the “well” where water is stored. (Proverbs 18:4)
Wine symbolizes the Holy Spirit anointing flowing from you (Ephesians 5:18). The Bible says you can’t put new wine in an old skin because it will burst. If you place the new wine of the Holy Spirit Himself into your old spirit you will die – that’s why you need the new birth.
How to Convert Water into Wine
If we will operate in the revelation that Mary – Jesus’ mother – operated in and follow with the obedience the servants had, we will see water turn to wine in our own lives.
Step 1: Whatever He tells you to do – do it! (John 2:5)
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
John 2:5 KJV
The first step to seeing the Holy Spirit anointing and fire operate in your life is to do whatever Jesus tells you to do.
This is such a simple concept, but I make it so hard in my own life (what about you?).
I have been guilty many times of hearing what Jesus told me to do and either (a) ignoring Him because of pride, fear, laziness, rebellion or any number of other undesirable character traits or (b) adding to what He told me to do.
God tells me to give $20 and I give $200. No He didn’t ask me to give him $200, but I figured if $20 is good $200 is better – wrong.
Whatever Jesus tells you to do – do that thing and only that thing.
Step 2: Jesus commanded the servants to fill the water pots – fill your own heart with the Word of God (John 2:7)
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
John 2:7 KJV
We are called to fill our hearts with the water of God’s Word – to the brim.
Like I said, we are each filled with a measure of the Word of God when we are born again, but in order for us to splash out on others, we need to have something to give.
Use your time with the Lord to fill your heart with the Word of God – to the brim.
Our spirit on the inside of us needs to be filled with water. This comes by praying in tongues, studying the Word of God and filling your heart with Words of encouragement not unbelief.
Step 3: Draw from your spirit and give it to the people
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
John 2:8 KJV
I never understood this until I started doing it. I had a pastor who taught me this truth and it’s the primary thing that people miss when they are flowing with God’s spirit.
Don’t plan it all out and try to figure out how to be anointed by the Holy Spirit. Instead, get up in front of someone and draw the water you put inside of you out and give it to the person in front of you.
What do I mean?
When you get in a position where someone needs God in their life, be the person to pull the Word of God you put in your heart out and give it back to the person.
This will only work because of what you’ve done in your secret place, closet with the Lord.
Step 4: People won’t understand it’s not you speaking
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
John 2:9 KJV
Just as the people had no clue the wine was water so too people won’t realize what you’re saying isn’t coming from you. Your goal has to be to get your head out of the way and listen to your spirit man.
For out of your spirit will flow rivers of living water.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
John 7:38 KJV
Many more scriptures talk about these rivers…
- Proverbs 18:4
- Isaiah 12:3
- Isaiah 44:3
The only way to get wine in your life is to fill your heart with water and then open your mouth in faith to draw that water out of your heart and into the hands of a person in front of you. That’s when the Holy Spirit will take over and make it wine.
Just as the people had no clue that the wine they were drinking was once water, but the servants knew – so too you will be the only one to truly know that what you spoke wasn’t you at all.
Step 5: The people got the benefit of what they did for the governor – do it for God’s Approval Only (John 2:9)
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
John 2:9 KJV
This is the most important thing to remember. The people at the party got the benefit of the wine they served for the governor. It was the governor’s approval that mattered.
So too we are to minister to God and the people will get the benefit. Do everything you do as unto the Lord and not for the people.
I don’t do these blog posts for the people who read them. Jesus told me to build them and I do them unto Him. You just get to get in on the benefits of my personal time with Jesus.
This keeps my eyes off of your approval (or disapproval).
Jesus kept the best wine for last.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
John 14:12 KJV
Just as the governor marveled in verse 10 of John 2 and said…
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
John 2:10 KJV
Jesus has kept the best anointing of the Holy Spirit for last. I have a promise from the Lord…
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Acts 2:17 KJV
The spirit of God is available to everyone who earnestly desires to have more of God.
So fill your heart with the water of the Word of God daily and get the well of your heart primed for the spirit of God to flow through you. Listen to what the Lord tells you to do and pull the water out and into the hand of someone who needs the anointing of Jesus today.
This is true prosperity.
