Welcome back to yet another blog post where we continue to talk about the Salvation that we each have the opportunity to receive because of Jesus Christ. Today we look at the very first step in entering into the promised land is to turn aside to meet God.
In this post, I want to look at Moses yet again as he continues to fight against God. In the last post we saw how he tried to free the people of Egypt in his own strength. Moses let his emotions get the best of him and it ended him up on the backside of the desert.
If you missed our post from last week, you can catch up by reading Salvation can’t be Earned.
Moses had given up. He was content to live outside of Egypt, marry a wife and settle down. Really he was running from the calling God placed on his life, and he did this for over 40 years.
But as we will see today, regardless of what we do, God is still willing, ready and able to receive us back. He wants a relationship with each one of us, and it starts by turning aside to meet with Him.
Our Text

God’s calling burns in each one of us
2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
Exodus 3:2 KJV
Moses was stuck on the back side of the desert for 40 years after he messed up in Egypt. He was hiding, afraid because he tried to win a battle in his own strength.
Moses was a murderer, but all was not lost for Moses. God still had a plan for him.
God sent an angel to flag him down in the desert. He wanted Moses to complete his mission.
No one can escape the call God has for us
Just as the angel of the Lord didn’t consume the burning bush so the call God has on each one of our lives isn’t consumed as we grow older.
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
Romans 11:29 KJV
God’s call for Moses found him hiding in the wilderness. Maybe you feel like Moses. You’ve spent your whole life trying to fight sin or addiction and finally realized you just can’t do it.
So you’ve run to the wilderness and now you hide from your calling and from God. You’re hiding trying to escape the consequences of your actions.
That’s exactly what Moses was doing.
He was a murderer. He was a man who was destined to set an entire people free and in one moment dashed his whole destiny – at least that’s what he thought.
WE must decide to “turn aside” and receive the free gift of Salvation
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
Exodus 3:3 KJV
God was ready to offer Moses salvation from his sins. Moses made the choice to listen.
Just as Moses decided to walk towards God, we too must decide to turn towards God instead of continuing to run away.
God speaks when we choose to listen
4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
Exodus 3:4 KJV
It’s only when Moses chose to leave his comfort zone and take a step towards what he knew was God that he heard God’s voice. Moses made himself available and immediately God gave him an assignment.
God is waiting on you to choose this day whom you will serve.
Often times I hear people saying, “I wish I could hear God.” But they’re unwilling to put themselves in places where they know God is.
It’s in your hands you can receive salvation from bondage to sin
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Jeremiah 29:11 KJV
Moses made a choice to quit running from God. He was tired of running.
It’s our choice to walk towards God.
God didn’t force Himself on Moses and He won’t force Himself on you. Instead, he will wait patiently and burn openly for you.
God didn’t call to Moses or yell at Him to turn aside.
God simply waited for Moses to choose Him. This is the same thing that God is doing now.
God wants a relationship with you. He wants you to come to Him, but He won’t force himself on you. You have to make the choice to turn aside and listen to what God has to say.
