The Word of God is the seed we sow into the hearts of others and ourselves. A few months ago, we looked at the parable of the sower. I posted a sermon on the 4 different types of soil.
This week we are going to look at the seed that is sown in the parable. What is the seed? Then… What is faith? What causes seed to grow?
Many times we want to be prosperous, but a farmer cannot have crops without having first planted something. Just like the farmer – we cannot be blessed by reaping a harvest without first planting something to harvest.
Our Text
14 The sower soweth the word.
23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
Mark 4:14;23-29 KJV
What is the Seed? The Word
Jesus makes it very clear here. After telling the parable of the sower, Jesus is explaining it to his close disciples. He says in verse 14 of Mark 4 that, “The sower soweth the word.”
If the sower sows the Word, then that would make the Word of God the seed sown into the ground in this parable. The soil then is the heart or spirit of a man.
The Word of God = Seed sown into hearts of men
When the Word of God is preached, the seed is sown into the soil of a man’s heart. It is up to that man either to hear the Word and plant it deep into his/her heart or let it fall by the side.
26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
Mark 4:26 KJV
Growing up I always thought of these scriptures in relation to witnessing. I would think, “Well… The Word of God gets preached by someone and some people listen and get saved, some get saved and then fall away, and others don’t hear at all.”
While this verse is talking about that, we have to remember that the entire kingdom of God works the same way!
What do I mean?
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
This verse says that with the heart you believe and with the mouth you confess. Just like that works for salvation, it will work for healing and prosperity and anything else.
You didn’t receive salvation through faith one way and then operate by different rules of faith after you became a christian.
The same “rules” or principles apply!
Faith for salvation operates on the same principles as faith for healing or prosperity
With the heart, you hear the Word of God and faith comes, then with your mouth you speak out the Word of God in your heart. That’s how you exercise faith!
Then…What is Faith? The Word planted in our Hearts
We want to make things more complex than they need to be. When we hear God’s word with our natural ears and think about the Word daily (Joshua 1:8-9), then we begin to hide God’s Word in our hearts.
Just like the sower might preach to the lost about Jesus and they will hear with their ears and come to believe Jesus is the Christ, so can you and I as believers preach the Word to ourselves. It’s called meditating.
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[a] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:8-9 NKJV
That word “meditate” means to talk to yourself. You have to read, think about and then preach the Word of God to yourself everyday until God’s Word becomes A Word in your spirit.
God’s Word has to become A WORD
This is maybe a tough concept to grasp if you have never walked in it before.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalms 119:11 KJV
When we meditate on (or read out loud) the Bible to ourselves, we are hearing the word of God with our natural ear. But our spirit – the real you – also has an ear. That’s the ear we want to hear from.
This might make more sense if we look at what Jesus says…
23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mark 4:23 KJV
Was Jesus talking to a bunch of people without any physical ears? Were his disciples all deaf?
NO!
He was talking about their human spirit’s ears. Jesus is saying if you are able to understand in your spirit what I am saying then listen.
The reason why we don’t understand this is because we don’t spend enough time planting the Word and watering it.
We hopp from scripture to scripture never giving any one verse enough meditation or time to be planted into our hearts.
Until GOD’s Word becomes A Word it will not be THE Word (or THE ANSWER that is real to you) in your situation
What am I saying? Until you take the time to meditate on ONE scripture until you hide it into your heart, you will not be able to walk by faith in that area. It hasn’t become real to you yet. You must allow that scripture to grow in the soil of YOUR heart for it to produce in YOUR life.
What causes Seed to Grow? Speaking the Word over and over and over…. and over again.
So we know that the Word is seed so really the question, “What causes Seed to Grow?” can be worded like this, “What causes the Word of God planted in our hearts to grow?”
We see the answer here in Mark.
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
Mark 4:24-27 KJV
You want to have more seed? Then sow more seed yourself. Take the revelation you already have of the Word of God and preach it to anyone listening.
But here is the key. Any seed sown in a man’s heart requires time and patience. It says in verse 27 that you will sleep and rise night and day. That means it will take time for the seed you plant to grow.
Be a continuous planter and become a continuous harvester
The Word is the Seed. Plant the Word of God continuously and see what God does. You will begin to grow in more knowledge, revelation and understanding of the Word of God. And that is where true prosperity lies.
