The name “Jesus” is the container used to represent the power and authority of the Son of God Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus works in heaven, earth, and hell.
Main Point
Hi guys,
Today we are breaking down three places where the name of Jesus will work. We know the name of Jesus is a powerful tool that Jesus Himself has given us at our disposal as we operate here on this earth to carry out His will, but it’s important to know just how powerful the name of Jesus really is.
Remember the name of Jesus represents the authority of Jesus.
Our Text
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Philippians 2:10 KJV
From this text we see that there are three specific locations where the name of Jesus works. It also just so happens to be the only three locations that exist in all of the universe.
So what I’m actually saying is that the name of Jesus works everywhere – in heaven, earth and hell.
Names hold Authority & Power
We’re talking about names holding power and authority.
The Name of MOM: An example from my childhood
The best example of this that I can think of is when you were a young kid and your mom left you in charge of things in the house while she was away. I have one younger brother and whether my mom explicitly said I was in charge – I would take a few liberties.
I’d find myself saying, “Mom said _____” or “I’m telling Mom!”
Maybe you had a similar experience growing up, but you get the point.
When I invoked the name “MOM” everything behind that name came with that name. It wasn’t the physical name, it was all the power and authority that name represented as I spoke it.
The Name of Jesus is Higher than All Names
The same thing is true with the name of Jesus. Just like the name MOM in my life held a certain level of respect and authority so too the name of Jesus holds respect and authority.
Here’s the thing though… if I walked into the White House and began to speak with the President of the United States and tried to use my Mom’s name to get something – they’d laugh me out of the building!
My mom’s name isn’t higher than the president of the United States. He has more authority than she does.
But the name of Jesus is higher than all the other names. Unlike my mom’s name which is higher than my name, but has limitations on where I can use it, the name of Jesus is higher than all other names.
But I can hear someone saying it now, “That’s great Nathan, but if you go into the White House and try to use the name of Jesus you too will get laughed out of the room.”
You’re right and it’s for a very good reason. The power of a name only comes when there is knowledge of the person behind the name.
The power in a name comes with the knowledge of the person behind the name.
A name is only powerful when it is invoked against someone who knows the power behind the name.
Think about it like this.
If I come into a new organization and someone tells me “Tom said you have to do _____.” Well if I don’t know who Tom is their words might not mean too much to me at all.
My thoughts are Well cool Tom wants me to do ____ but I’m not sure I have to listen to Tom plus don’t they know I have all these other “more important things” to do?
If it turns out later that someone tells me, “Hey Nathan, Tom is actually the CEO of this organization.” Well now you know without question I will respond to whatever they say he wants me to do. Why? Because his name is higher than any of the other employees’ names.
But also recognize this – regardless of if someone tells me who Tom is or not there will be a day where if I don’t do what Tom asks I’m going to have to stand in front of him (directly or indirectly) and give an account for my life.
Remember this because there are people in this world who don’t know who Jesus is already on their way to hell, and they’re doing things that they believe are more important. It’s our responsibility to tell them who Jesus is so that they can start obeying and live. Otherwise, some day they will stand before Jesus and have to give an account of how they lived their life.
Who is Jesus?
So if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why does Nathan write these blog posts?” It’s so I can answer this one specific question as many times and ways as I possibly can. Because it’s so important to me that everyone knows who Jesus is.
Personally, Jesus is the man who gave me everything I could ever dream of and more, but that didn’t start until I gave everything I had to Him.
For he [God] hath made him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [Jesus].
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV
Many have heard a religious description of who Jesus was / is, but few have heard the simple truth.
- Jesus is God
- Jesus came to earth to show us a clear picture of the character of God.
- Jesus died cursed by God with the punishment for our (yours and mine) sin.
- Jesus rose out of the grave by the power of the Holy Spirit conquering death and hell.
- Jesus ascended to heaven, and lives to make intercession for us with God.
It really is that simple.
Jesus was and is a perfect man. He didn’t sin and never will sin, and because of that fact He was the chosen vessel that God used to bring redemption to mankind.
Now the Bible says that if you’ll believe those things I outlined above and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. You’ll be saved from the power of sin, translated into the kingdom of heaven and your name will be written in the book of life.
That means you’ll enter the family of God and be removed from the family of the devil.
Prayer of Salvation
Here’s a simple prayer that you can pray for yourself to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus I believe you died on the cross and rose again 3 days later. I accept you as my Lord and Savior right now and ask you to come into my heart. Be the Lord of my life. I will honor and obey you from this day forward. In Jesus Name, Amen

Wrapping Things Up
The name of Jesus is powerful. It has the authority to break yokes of bondage, remove blindness, heal diseases and so much more, but the most important power that the name of Jesus contains is the salvation power.
Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
It really is that simple.
